The terminology of a Swedish massage is also known as the classic massage. This term is recognized in the English and also Dutch speaking countries.

The general techniques of a Swedish massage will be divided into 5 major component of the basic strokes:

1. The sliding and gliding are known as effleurage. It’s French meaning to skim and to touch lightly. It is used by the stroke of the palm at the beginning of every massage and it ends with similar stokes to provide relaxation.
2. Kneading-petrissage. In French, it also meant kneading. This different as it involves the deep compression of the muscles. It also involves wringing, pick up and squeeze.
3. Rhythmic tapping -tapotement. It is a series of rhythmic percussion made by cupping of the palm, administered at the edge of the hand. It also meant to tap or drum to prepare the nervous system to “wake up”
4. Friction- where a deep pressure is applied to a specific area
5. Vibration and shaking
